Overview

Designed for budding builders and thinkers aged 7–9, our Junior Engineers camp offers an exciting dive into real tech exploration. Campers get hands-on with robotics, creative maker projects, and coding games using Scratch — all while experimenting, collaborating, and solving challenges. It’s a high-energy, project-packed program that turns curiosity into creation, and play into purposeful learning.

Program Highlights

The camp kicks off with an Introduction to Robotics principles. Kids undertake Paper Robot Mission, a more advanced robot craft! Then, over three sessions, they use the Kano Star Wars kit – assembling electronic sensors and coding them to play Star Wars-themed missions. For example, in Star Wars I, II, III sessions, they might build a sensor that reacts to hand movements like a Jedi gesture or create sound effects from the Star Wars saga through code. These kits make learning electronics and coding incredibly fun by tapping into popular themes.

Art and engineering blend together here. Campers work on Recycled Crafts (turning household junk into useful items or robot models), String Art & Yarn Crafts (for geometry and design skills, like making geometric string patterns or pom-pom creatures), and DIY Mini Dioramas – small scenes they construct, possibly tech-themed (e.g. a mini “Mars base” diorama after learning about rovers). Such projects improve design thinking and let kids exercise creativity beyond screens and circuits.

This age group jumps into real coding with MIT Scratch. Starting with an Introduction to Scratch and event-driven programming, they quickly progress to making their own games. They’ll code a Baseball Game where they program a bat to hit a ball, and a Fruit Catcher game where a character catches falling objects – teaching them variables and conditions in a visual way. As they advance, they take on an exciting project: Rocket Blaster Game – designing a game from scratch where a rocket navigates obstacles. These Scratch projects not only teach programming concepts but also game design, and kids can play and share their creations, boosting their pride.

Depending on time and interest, instructors will introduce Snap Circuits for this group, where campers snap together circuit pieces to make circuits like a musical doorbell.

Many activities at this stage involve team challenges – e.g. working in pairs to debug each other’s Scratch game or collaborating to build the tallest tower from craft materials. This builds teamwork skills. We also incorporate a few friendly competitions, like a robot maze challenge where teams race to code their Sphero robot through a maze. Such challenges are thrilling and teach resilience and problem-solving (if the code fails, they learn to try again).
